The idea of phase is based on the relationship (the shifted starting times and spatial locations) of two or more entities (waves, themes, melodies, etc.). The idea of repeating material displaced in space and offset in time probably goes back to our distant ancestors gathered around a bonfire while some talented one of them sang a song and others imitated the song in close succession, in what we later called a round (Frere Jacques) on the way to becoming a key form of traditional children's songs. Heterophony (definitely see Wikipedia) is the term in classical music for the expression of the idea with many variations, a form and texture used in music all over the world. There's no question that the idea has roots in time immemorial. In classical music it's been a mainstay since the 16th Century sometimes as a round buried in complexity and other times as a fugue, a form mastered by J.S. Bach as no others since but used by many. I've been exploring the idea since my early days as a composer in as many ways as I can imagine. This PhaseTrio, along with a recent piece and more to follow, is the latest version of my thinking as I apply it to visual music. Always the play is focused on finding the sweet spot for the combination of displacements and offsets.

Video BANNED BY YOUTUBE is back on my channel. This is a good example of what we all face as bots and artificial intelligence take over the decision-making of humans. YouTube's system was confused and panicked when it saw the "abnormal" title of Mother's Message and it tried to connect its content, the sweet capture of a plant blowing in the wind on a summer's day, with that title. YT's algorithm flagged the piece for "inappropriate content"; it was incapable of interpreting "Mother" as Mother Nature and "Message" as the rhythm, color, and movement of the plant's leaves. People at YouTube reinstated my video after I wrote an appeal and worked around their resistance to actually making contact with another human. My granddaughter, who works for Google, told me I was an "edger", one of the 5% who doesn't fit into their systems. She told me they learn about people like me in school and how difficult we are to accommodate in their designs (she's a senior at UC-Berkeley studying computers and engineering). Full video on my YouTube channel @ PhaseTrio is composed of exactly the same single line sequence that twirls and sometimes expands only to return quickly to the line state. What finally results is from a mix of the three line repetitions displaced in space and offset in time . The play is focused on finding the sweet spot for the combination of offsets. An early lesson in classical composition is to make the most of the least; this piece is based on a line which in video is definitely just a row of dots. The music is based on related principles to the video and is composed on an alphaSyntauri synthesizer, the first affordable hybrid synthesizer, an instrument that set the stage for the MIDI revolution. I taught seminars in the alphaSyntauri all over the USA and set it up in the studios of many artists and universities.
